16 years of drumming history...
2019 will mark our 16th year as a band! We started the band on January 23rd, 2003 & We’ve come a long way since our first event at Roundstone Garden Centre in Worthing. Celebration Samba is now firmly established as a group and you’re likely to see us playing out and about at many local carnivals and other events.
Here’s the history bit:
Founded originally by Janice and Ivan simply because Worthing needed a samba band! The band was named Celebration Samba “…as it’s about celebrating life – life’s too short not to!” says Janice.
Celebration Samba now boasts more than 40 members in its Bateria of all ages. From the sudos (players of the large drums) who provide the main beat for many of the pieces to reps and snares who play some great rolling rhythms, to the high pitched tams, bells and shakers. We all play our part in creating the sweet sound of samba music.
Celebration Samba has 4 mestres (or leaders) Barry, Ivan & Kyle & Jake. There is always scope for a drummer to step up and Mestre. That's what Jake did. It's the Mestre that provides the musical direction and improvisation for all of the pieces that we play but it’s always a team effort in the end.
The Bateria is made up of young and young at heart, from all walks of life. Ladies, Gents, Mums, Dads, Grannies, Grandads & Great Grandads. All are welcome to come along and join in the Fun.
We even provide the instruments.
